A Creative and Surprising Universe

The fundamental interactions — strong, weak, electromagnetic and gravitational — are the basic operations, the substance, of the essential algebra — matter/energy — by which the Universe spontaneously self-organizes. From the constant flow of matter/energy, from the constant interaction of each particle, element and molecule, patterns and organizations spontaneously emerge: nebulae and galaxies, stars and solar systems, planets, atmospheres, continents and seas, forests, plants and all beings. From this joint and interactive dynamic, all things form and self-design. From the fundamental properties of matter/energy, from the interactive and progressive set of things in space/time, results the ever-changing generation of all universal order and beauty.

Other attributes, corollaries of the creative power, of the constant flow of transformation, are periodicity — the cycles of construction and destruction, of life and death — and chaotic irregularities. Destruction and creation are two sides of the same coin; without destruction there could be no new creation, everything would be eternally fixed and motionless, lifeless. The destructive power of the Universe is indeed fearsome; explosions and collisions are routine. Galaxies collide, pass through each other, breaking apart stars and planetary systems; stars explode into supernovae, which become cradles of new lives.

The changes are not arbitrary, but, in light of the limited human capacity for observation, they often occur in unforeseen ways — in fact, quantum physics demonstrates that fundamental particles can undergo random changes. Movements, such as those of galactic clusters, of galaxies and their stars, of nebulae, of clouds, of sea waves, of magma currents at the center of the earth, are truly unpredictable and surprising.
