Integration: Practical Effects

Experiences such as those provided by Ayahuasca are, by nature, transcendental, transpersonal: they broaden the experience and vision of reality, diminish the empire of the ego, facilitate a change of values. It becomes evident that the use of a substance like Ayahuasca is more useful and safer within a context and a discipline aimed at growth and spiritual evolution, a program calling attention to fundamental ethical and moral values. An adequate discipline provides a body of ethics capable of supporting the changes required, clarifying the objectives, keeping the mind focused and open to the increasing deepening of the experience. It is the individual, his intention, that determines whether the experience will be mystical and religious, evolutionary or not. Considerable preparation is necessary to reach a mystical experience, even using Ayahuasca, and an effective work of integration is necessary so that the experience is transformative.

Whether the expanded state of consciousness induced by the experience leads to positive and lasting changes or not depends on the intention and dedication of the user. A vision, even a brief one, of a greater reality can change a person's life if they decide to integrate that vision into their reality. To receive an intuition, or 'light', is not the same as applying that intuition in daily life; there is no inherent connection between a mystical experience of unity and the expression or manifestation of that unity in daily life. This point is perhaps obvious, yet frequently forgotten by those who debate whether, in principle, a psychoactive agent may or may not have value in the realm of spiritual search. Whatever the source or origin of illumination, the revelations can only have practical effects with the permission and dedication of the individual.
