THE PHARMACOLOGY OF AYAHUASCA
Association with medications:
It is clear that the concomitant use of MAO inhibiting drugs, or drugs that in some way interfere with the serotonergic system, is not recommended since, theoretically, it can lead to the so-called Serotonergic Syndrome — a clinical picture resulting from a pathogenic and potentially dangerous elevation of Serotonin levels, susceptible of triggering convulsions, hyperthermia and loss of consciousness. As a matter of prudence and prevention of this eventuality — never recorded with the traditional use of Ayahuasca but theoretically possible — we do not recommend the use of the brew for people in treatment with antidepressants that are permanent inhibitors of Monoamine Oxidase, until three weeks before the Ceremony to allow the total recomposition of the stock of endogenous MAO and the return of the nervous system to its natural physiology.
