The Essence

MYSTICAL EXPERIENCE

The essence

Unity, the one, is the central experience, the central concept, of all forms of mysticism, although this may be emphasized to a greater or lesser degree and understood in various ways, or even not explicitly mentioned. Unity is perceived, or directly apprehended. That is, unity belongs to experience and not only to interpretation, insofar as this distinction is possible. Stace, W. T. in "Mysticism and Philosophy".

There is no continuity break between the microcosm of the psyche and the macrocosm of the universe. The essential itself, as Stace affirms, is the experience of unity. To explain a little better: the experience of mystical union presupposes the rupture of the subject/object dichotomy. This rupture is the color, the mark, the essence of the experience. To perceive that there is a unified field, a union between a bird and its environment, is merely an ecological perception and understanding, while to transcend the habitual limits of the 'self', to feel dissolved in the larger context, is a mystical experience. This experience of unity, the mystical union, results from a transcendental resolution of polarities into unity. There actually occurs a chain resolution of the multiple polarizations of perception. The trigger for this resolution to be completed may be any stimulus, such as 'leaving a dark place for a bright one' and the surprise of feeling oneself awakening into the infinite of the cosmic day, or 'seeing a coin (two sides) spinning and forming a sphere shining in the sunlight (a unity)' and then absorbing and dissolving oneself into the universal sphere. Creativity, flexibility and connectivity (the ability to make connections and associations) are the most fertile ground for experiences of this kind to occur.
